Froma Harrop, head of the National Conference of Editorial Writers, takes unhinged swipe at Tea Party.

Froma Harrop, head of the National Conference of Editorial Writers, takes unhinged swipe at Tea Party.

According to Froma Harrop, expecting the government to live within its means is the same as “blowing up the U.S. economy,” and is more serious than a terrorist attack requiring a military response.

Just who is Froma Harrop, you ask.

Harrop is a member of the Providence Journal’s editorial board, and President of the National Conference of Editorial Writers. Ironically, that group has started something it calls the “Civility Project,” aimed at improving the quality of political discourse.

On August 3, James Taranto of the Wall Street Journal took her to task for one of her latest displays of “civility,” in which she wrote:

“Make no mistake: The tea party Republicans have engaged in economic terrorism against the United States–threatening to blow up the economy if they don’t get what they want. And like the al-Qaida bombers, what they want is delusional: the dream of restoring some fantasy caliphate. . . . Americans are not supposed to negotiate with terrorists, but that’s what Obama has been doing. . . . That the Republican leadership couldn’t control a small group of ignoramuses in its ranks has brought disgrace on their party. But oddly, Obama’s passivity made it hard for responsible Republicans to control their destructive children. The GOP extremists would ask Obama for his firstborn, and he’d say, ‘OK.’ So they think, why not ask for his second-born, to which he responds, ‘Let’s talk.’ “

In response, Harrop writes a piece asking,”Am I Uncivil?”

In a word, yes.

Harrop then engages in more of her brand of civility.

She defines incivility as “not letting other people speak their piece.” By her definition, Senator John Kerry and Paul Krugman are uncivil. Both want the media to censor Tea Party opinions in the media.

“Of course,” she writes, “there are matters of delicacy, and I dispensed with all sweet talk in this particular column. And I did stoop to some ad hominem remarks, I’ll admit.”

One is almost tempted to respond by asking, “Ya think?”

She writes:

However, it was a Wall Street Journal editorial that first called the tea-partiers “hobbits.” After John McCain picked up the hobbits theme in a much-quoted remark, a subsequent editorial expanded on it, ending with:

The debt-limit hobbits should also realize that at this point the Washington fracas they are prolonging isn’t helping their cause. Republicans are not looking like adults to whom voters can entrust the government.

Harrop – like the writers at the Wall Street Journal – apparently does not know that the hobbits were actually the heroes of the story. Calling Tea Party activists “hobbits” is essentially calling them the good guys.

But Harrop then takes a disturbing twist in her screed.

Claiming to be “engaging in the defense of my country,” Harrop writes:

As far as the facts are concerned, I stand my ground. Terrorism is not confined to physical attacks. In May, The Wall Street Journal reported this:

The Pentagon has concluded that computer sabotage coming from another country can constitute an act of war, a finding that for the first time opens the door for the U.S. to respond using traditional military force.

“If you shut down our power grid, maybe well put a missile down one of your smokestacks,” said a military official.

Blowing up the U.S. economy to make a point would be an even more serious attack, in my book. And that’s what the tea party saboteurs were threatening. They are what they are.

Not only does she double down on her ad hominem attacks against the Tea Party, she seems to imply that perhaps it would be okay for the government to use military force against the people who want the government to remain true to the Constitution and live within its means.

The only ones “blowing up” the economy are the leftists who insist on Marxist policies that have kept unemployment high and brought the nation to the brink of financial ruin.

Yes, Ms. Harrop, you are uncivil, and this screed also puts you in the ranks of the unhinged.

  1. Great blog! Do you have any suggestions for aspiring writers? I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any tips? Many thanks!
